Being largely in control of your work schedule can be hugely beneficial, not only to your career, but to your personal life. Having a degree of control is exactly what many remote workers appreciate—in other words, the ability to decide when and where they work, and being in the driver’s seat when it comes to career and family life.
Heidi D., an experienced elementary school teacher, is the subject of this week’s FlexJobs success story. A resident of Matthews, North Carolina, Heidi had enjoyed a classroom career in a public school system, but chose to stay home with her children as her family grew.
Then, after more than a decade focused on raising her kids, Heidi was set on reentering the workforce, but she wasn’t willing to abandon being available for her school-age children. Heidi set her sights on finding a flexible, work-from-home position—a search that led her to FlexJobs.
Heidi became a FlexJobs member and was hired by VIPKid, a global company headquartered in Beijing that offers English language education to young children in China.
Read on to find out how Heidi found a great remote job that put her in the driver’s seat in her career:
A Growing Family Brings Shifting Priorities
Heidi offered great insight in her responses to questions FlexJobs asks members who found work using our service. Heidi taught for six years as an elementary teacher in public schools, but things changed. “When my husband and I started our family, staying home with them was a priority,” she wrote.
A big concern, Heidi said, was how to address the employment gap on her resume. “For the past 11 years, I have stayed home with our four children, which left me with few traditional options for employment,” she wrote. “As my kids have grown and all have begun some form of school outside of the home, I was in a position to use my educational background and talents, but didn’t want the burden of being obligated to a commute or set schedule, so I could maintain flexibility with my kids.”
FlexJobs Membership Comes with High Recommendations
Many of our successful FlexJobs members discover our extensive jobs database through an online search. Others, like Heidi, find out about the benefits of a FlexJobs membership from acquaintances who’ve found jobs through our site. “I talked with a friend about wanting to find some sort of work that I could potentially do from home, and she recommended FlexJobs as a resource for finding options that fit my specific needs,” Heidi told us.
In turn, Heidi said she now passes along the word about the benefits of a FlexJobs membership. “I recommend FlexJobs to a friend at least once a week since I found my position (literally hours after I signed up with the site),” she wrote. “The ease of use and the ability to take ownership over the way I re-entered the workplace has been priceless.”
How FlexJobs Works to Help Job Seekers
Heidi offered great tips and insight about her FlexJobs experience. She found FlexJobs “so user-friendly, and putting in my specific abilities and qualifications was a breeze,” Heidi wrote. “I uploaded a resume and assumed that because I had been out of the work force for so long that I would most likely get jobs that didn’t require my specific skill set (which may be seen as out-of-date). Boy was I wrong!”
As she explored her FlexJobs options, Heidi said she was encouraged by the site’s super simple options. “The best thing about the website was that I felt like I was in the driver’s seat,” she told us. “It was within minutes of entering in my qualifications that I began receiving notifications of job listings and openings that suited my needs. I was now in a position to choose employment based on what worked for me.”
Inspiring Tips and Insights for Other Job Seekers
Heidi told us her experience with FlexJobs was great from the beginning. “I looked through the list on the first day and found my current position within a few hours of signing on with FlexJobs,” she wrote. Heidi took specific steps with her FlexJobs membership that fueled her success. “Creating a resume of my own was one way I was able to ‘stand out’ in the job application process, and uploading it to my FlexJob page was simple,” she said.
From all indications, Heidi’s new job dovetails beautifully with her personal life. “I have been working now as an English teacher to children in Beijing, China online for 5 months. The company is fantastic!” Heidi wrote. “My son (who is adopted from China, making my connection to China through my job even more meaningful!) had surgery last month, and the company was so understanding and flexible with my scheduling requests.”
Heidi continued: “I now teach part-time 12-15 hours a week and finish my teaching day before any of my children are up in the morning for school. I choose my own hours weekly that I am available and students sign up for class with me according to my availability. Once my teaching is finished in the early morning I wake up my kids and continue my role as ‘stay-at-home mom’ but with the benefit of a career to call my own and pride in the quality of my work.”
What’s more, Heidi said, her new job has helped her make a global connection. “I have begun to build relationships with children and families half-way around the world,” she said. “My current position as a teacher is rewarding and purposeful. I love what I do!”
Heidi’s great parting words: “FlexJob fan for life!”
